About Us

Habitat for Humanity of Smith County is a Christian housing ministry, and one of 1,675 affiliates of Habitat for Humanity International.  Habitat has built more than 150,000 houses around the world, providing more than 750,000 people in more than 3,000 communities with safe, decent, affordable shelter. HFHI was founded in 1976 by Millard Fuller along with his wife Linda.

  • Habitat houses are sold to low-income families at cost and financed at zero percent interest; they are not given away.
  • Habitat for Humanity began serving Smith County in 1989, building the first house in the 1991.
  • HFHSC has provided more than 77 adults and 135 children with safe, quality housing in Smith County.
  • The goal of HFHSC is to complete at least 10 houses each year in Smith County; to date 62 houses have been built.
  • The cost to fully sponsor a family to live in a 3-bedroom, 1-1/2 bath Habitat house with HFHSC is $45,000.  The average mortgage payment for families with taxes and insurance is $285/month.
  • HFHSC has a family selection committee that evaluates prospective homeowners using three criteria: (1) Need for quality, affordable housing ; (2) Willingness to partner with HFHSC; (3) Ability to pay a zero percent interest mortgage.
  • "Sweat equity" is the unpaid labor invested by each partner family in the Habitat ministry.  Sweat equity increases the personal stake of the family members in their house and fosters the development of partnerships with other people in the community.  350 hours of "sweat equity" are required for single head of households; 500 hours are required for double head of households.
  • Partnerships with HFHSC enable supporters to see tangible results of their time and money; build friendships; improve team-building skills, enhance morale; develop leadership; create sense of pride and accomplishment.
  • HFHSC builds quality, affordable housing that offers dignity and pride, encourages family stability, educational achievement and responsible citizenship.
  • HFHSC invites people of all backgrounds, races and religions to build houses together in partnership with families in need.
  • HFHSC is governed by a local Board of Directors made up of a diverse group of community, business and religious leaders.
  • HFHSC is a 501c(3) charitable organization and all proceeds are tax deductible as allowed by law.
Mission Statement
The mission of HFHSC is to work in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with people in need by building and renovating houses so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which people can live and grow into all that God intended.
