Church Partnership Opportunities

Congregations of all sizes can partner with Habitat for Humanity in a variety of ways. That partnership works best when we can help your church carry out its goals for ministry.

rehabitatReHabitat was started in October 2009 to help low-income seniors with emergency home repairs and modifications.  With the help of a grant of $200,000 from a “Social Services Block Grant”, through the Health & Human Services Commission, Habitat for Humanity of Smith County formed a new division named “ReHabitat of Smith County”.  The main objective of the new program was “Senior Home Repair/Modification” is to help eliminate poverty housing for seniors in Smith County.

Through additional funding from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas, the program has now expanded to low-income individuals with disabilities.

It has become increasingly evident that all categories of low-income individuals in Smith County need assistance and as additional funding becomes available ReHabitat will serve these individuals.

To qualify for the program the household needs to have an income that is less then 50% of the Median Income of Smith County. The homeowner is expected to be a cooperative partner with the staff, subcontractors and volunteers. The homeowner must sign a “Retention Agreement” that is in effect for five years after the repairs are completed. The owner must repay a portion of the cost of repair/modification based on the time the homeowner owned the home before selling or refinancing.

The program has limited funds so our ability to repair everything may be limited but the most critical repairs are completed. Our general contractor makes the assessment and then the assessment is evaluated for which items can be repaired and the cost of requested repairs. When the application is approved, the homeowner is notified of the approval and what repairs will be done to the home.
